Who We Are

This non-profit organization is a board made up of practicing Registered Massage Therapists and a paid Administrator. The board (Executive) is made up of a mixture of experience and most importantly volunteers who give their time for the greater good of Massage Therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Executive is elected annually at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is held in the fall. Check out the current Board, here.

Our Foundation

The Act Respecting the Practice of Massage Therapy was originally proclaimed on June 1 2002. The more recent Massage Therapy Act was proclaimed in December 2005. This Act outlines that in order to legally practice Massage Therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador, a person must apply and be in good standing with the NLMTA ( and with The College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador – to learn more about the CMTNL click here).

What We Do

The NLMTA has two main functions.
1 – The NLMTA facilitates professional liability insurance (http://lmicanada.com/) to its members which is legally necessary to practice in Newfoundland and Labrador. 2 – The Association was put in place to support its members. Advertising, managing a website that connects RMT’s with the public, answering membership questions, and providing guidance when needed.

Working Towards The Future

The Newfoundland and Labrador Massage Therapists Association is also proudly a founding member of the Canadian Massage Therapist Alliance. This Alliance was officially constituted in 1991 to provide a forum for collaboration, to advance massage therapy as a health care profession within Canada. Learn more about the CMTA at CMTA.

How We Do It

With reflection of the memberships ideas, feedback and collaboration of the board members, the NLMTA constantly works towards supporting and growing the future of Registered Massage Therapy within Newfoundland and Labrador. The NLMTA meets several times a year, between September and June in order to make sure they are on the right track and moving forward.
